Drill bits

Water well drill bits.

Professional bits for all formations and drilling methods, classified by IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) codes for precise formation matching.

Tricone roller bits

The most versatile and widely used bits in water well drilling — three rotating cones that crush rock efficiently.

  • Sizes: 2-1/2" to 36" diameter
  • Milled tooth: long sharp steel teeth for soft to medium formations (clays, shales, soft sandstones) — IADC series 1-2-3
  • TCI: hard carbide button inserts for medium-hard to hard rock (limestone, granite) — IADC series 4-8
  • Bearings: open (1-3) for cooling-fluid use, sealed (4-7) for extended life
  • We stock a wide range of IADC codes and sizes

PDC drill bits

Fixed-cutter bits with polycrystalline diamond compact cutters that shear rock for exceptional penetration rates.

  • Speed: 2–4× faster penetration in suitable formations
  • Longevity: can drill thousands of feet and remain reusable
  • Best for: deep municipal and large irrigation wells in uniform sedimentary formations
  • Avoid: very hard, fractured, or cherty formations
  • Higher upfront cost offset by low cost-per-foot drilled

Drag bits & DTH hammer bits

Drag bits slice through soft, unconsolidated formations; DTH hammers are pneumatic percussion drilling for the hardest rock.

  • Drag bits: stationary 3–4 wing blades for clays, sands, loams
  • DTH hammer bits: carbide button inserts, thousands of blows per minute
  • Air hammer: exceeds tricone in hard rock, produces very straight holes
  • Drive shoes: 90+ SKUs from 6" to 18"
  • Combination approach: drag → tricone → DTH hammer through layered formations

Reference

Understanding IADC bit codes.

The IADC three-digit code system helps match bits to formation hardness. First digit = formation hardness, second digit = sub-classification, third digit = bearing type and gauge protection.

DigitRangeMeaning
First digit1–3Steel tooth (soft to medium formations)
First digit4–8TCI (medium-hard to hard formations)
Second digit1–4Sub-classification within hardness range
Third digit1–3Open bearings — simpler, lower cost
Third digit4–7Sealed bearings — O-ring sealed, grease-lubricated

Example: A 517 TCI tricone = medium-formation tungsten-carbide bit with sealed journal bearings and gauge protection.

Casing

Well casing standards & materials.

Casing maintains the well opening, prevents collapse, and protects the water source from contamination.

PVC well casing

Thermoplastic pipe that is lightweight, corrosion-proof, and cost-effective for domestic and irrigation wells.

  • Diameters: 3" to 8" (6" typical for residential)
  • Standard: ASTM F480 specification
  • NSF-61 certified: safe for long-term contact with drinking water
  • Wall thickness: Schedule 40, Schedule 80, SDR 21/17 pressure-rated
  • Advantages: no rust/scale, smooth interior, lighter weight
  • Lengths: standard 10–20 foot joints

Steel well casing

Traditional high-strength casing for deep, unstable formations and municipal water supply wells.

  • Diameters: 3" through 24" (4-1/2", 5-9/16", 6-5/8", 8-5/8", 10-3/4", 12-3/4", 14"–24")
  • Standards: ASTM A53 Grade A and B (domestic and import)
  • Wall thickness: .216" to .500" depending on diameter
  • Advantages: high collapse strength, withstands deep formations
  • Lengths: 20–21 foot joints, plain end or T&C
  • 65+ steel casing SKUs in stock — domestic and import options

Screens

Well screens & slot sizing.

Screen selection is critical — slot size must retain formation or filter pack material while allowing maximum water flow.

Continuous wire-wrapped (Johnson)

V-wire wrapped around support rods with precise slots — high open area (15–30%), minimizes entrance velocity. Gold standard for municipal wells.

  • Slots from 0.006" to 0.100"+ available
  • Stainless steel 304/316 for corrosive water conditions
  • Maintains slot dimensions long-term

Slotted PVC / perforated pipe

Saw-cut slots or drilled holes — economical for domestic and irrigation wells.

  • Lower open area than wire-wrap
  • Rust-proof, economical for smaller diameters
  • Must be adequately thick for deep wells

Slot-size selection

Select to retain 40–50% of formation for naturally developed wells, or 90–100% of filter pack for gravel-pack wells.

  • Common sizes: .010", .020", .030", .040", .050", .060"
  • Always base selection on grain-size analysis
  • Steel: start smaller to account for corrosion widening
  • Stainless/PVC: dimensions remain stable

Reference

Slot size quick reference.

Match slot size to aquifer material — sieve analysis is required for final design.

Aquifer materialTypical slot sizeNotes
Fine sand.010" – .015"May require gravel pack for best results
Medium sand.020" – .030"Most common residential applications
Coarse sand.030" – .040"Natural development often sufficient
Gravel / coarse.040" – .060"+High-capacity irrigation/municipal wells
With gravel packBased on pack D10Retain 90–100% of pack material

Methods

Drilling methods comparison.

Choose the right method based on formation type, depth, diameter, and project requirements.

Mud rotary

The most common method for modern water wells.

  • How it works: rotating bit + drilling mud lifts cuttings
  • Best for: unconsolidated sediments, soft rock, deep boreholes
  • Advantages: versatile, maintains open holes, wide formation range
  • Applications: residential, irrigation, municipal alluvial

Air rotary / DTH hammer

Fast drilling in hard, dry rock formations.

  • How it works: compressed air + DTH hammer percussion
  • Best for: medium to hard rock, bedrock wells
  • Advantages: very fast in hard rock, clean dry holes
  • Applications: deep bedrock residential, granite/basalt aquifers

Cable tool (percussion)

Historic method still valuable for special applications.

  • How it works: heavy tools dropped + bailer removes cuttings
  • Best for: bouldery strata, alternating layers, remote locations
  • Advantages: simple, lowest fuel use, drives casing as it advances
  • Applications: small diameter wells, monitoring wells

Reverse circulation

Large-diameter municipal and high-capacity wells.

  • How it works: fluid down annulus, up through drill pipe
  • Best for: large diameter (24"+), detailed aquifer logging
  • Advantages: accurate sampling, efficient large-cutting removal
  • Applications: municipal production, test wells, gravel-pack
