Water Well Drill Bits

Professional bits for all formations and drilling methods, classified by IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) codes for precise formation matching:

Tricone Roller Bits

The most versatile and widely used bits in water well drilling, with three rotating cones that crush rock efficiently.

  • Sizes: 2-1/2" to 36" diameter
  • Milled Tooth (Steel Tooth): Long, sharp steel teeth for soft to medium formations (clays, shales, soft sandstones). IADC series 1-2-3.
  • TCI (Tungsten Carbide Insert): Hard carbide button inserts for medium-hard to hard rock (limestone, granite, hard sandstone). IADC series 4-8.
  • IADC Third Digit - Bearings:
    • 1-3: Open (roller) bearings - simpler, lower cost, requires drilling fluid/air cooling
    • 4-7: Sealed bearings (roller or journal) - O-ring sealed, grease lubricated for extended life
  • Selection Guide: Use milled-tooth open-bearing for fast drilling in soft clay/sand; switch to sealed-bearing TCI for hard rock layers
  • We stock a wide range of IADC codes and sizes — call for specific availability

PDC Drill Bits

Fixed-cutter bits with polycrystalline diamond compact cutters that shear rock for exceptional penetration rates.

  • Cutting Action: Scrapes/gouges formation rather than crushing - different than tricones
  • Speed: 2-4x faster penetration in suitable formations (shale, sandstone, limestone)
  • Longevity: Can drill thousands of feet and remain reusable with proper operation
  • Requirements: Sufficient RPM, weight-on-bit, and drilling fluid circulation with nozzles/jets
  • Best For: Deep municipal wells and large irrigation wells in uniform sedimentary formations
  • Avoid: Very hard, fractured, or cherty formations where impact can break cutters
  • Mud Properties: Use additives to prevent bit balling (clay adhesion) - high pump output essential
  • Cost Benefit: Higher upfront cost offset by low cost-per-foot drilled

Drag Bits & DTH Hammer Bits

  • Drag Bits (Blade Bits): Stationary 3-4 wing blades that slice through soft, unconsolidated formations (clays, sands, loams). Economical with no moving parts - can be rebuilt/resharpened.
  • Modern PDC Drag Bits: Diamond cutters on blades for improved durability in slightly harder materials
  • DTH Hammer Bits: Pneumatic percussion drilling with carbide button inserts for extremely hard or consolidated rock. Thousands of blows per minute chip away tough granite or quartzite.
  • Air Hammer Advantage: Far exceeds tricone penetration rates in hard rock; produces very straight holes
  • Combination Approach: Start with drag bit in sandy overburden, use tricone through cobbles, switch to DTH hammer in bedrock
  • Specialty: Bi-center bits, reamer bits, under-reamer bits, cable tool bits and drive shoes (90+ drive shoe SKUs from 6" to 18")
  • Hundreds of bit configurations in stock — call for our complete bit catalog
Understanding IADC Bit Codes

The IADC three-digit code system helps match bits to formation hardness:

First Digit (1-8): Formation hardness
  • 1-3: Steel tooth (soft to medium)
  • 4-8: TCI (medium-hard to hard)
Second Digit (1-4): Sub-classification within hardness range
Third Digit (1-7): Bearing type and gauge protection
  • 1-3: Open bearings
  • 4-7: Sealed bearings

Example: A 517 TCI tricone = medium formation tungsten-carbide bit with sealed journal bearings and gauge protection

Well Casing Standards & Materials

Casing maintains the well opening, prevents collapse, and protects the water source from contamination:

PVC Well Casing

Thermoplastic pipe that is lightweight, corrosion-proof, and cost-effective for domestic and irrigation wells.

  • Diameters: 3" to 8" (6" typical for residential) — additional sizes available by request
  • Standard: ASTM F480 specification for thermoplastic well casing
  • NSF-61 Certified: Safe for long-term contact with drinking water - no toxic plasticizers or heavy metals
  • Wall Thickness: Schedule 40 (shallow wells), Schedule 80 (deeper), SDR 21/17 (pressure-rated)
  • Advantages: No rust/scale, smooth interior (reduced friction loss), lighter weight, faster installation
  • Limitations: Lower collapse strength than steel - best for shallower wells or stable sandy aquifers
  • Lengths: Standard 10 to 20-foot joints (SDR21, Schedule 80)
  • Multiple wall thicknesses and connection styles in stock — call for availability
Steel Well Casing

Traditional high-strength casing for deep, unstable formations and municipal water supply wells.

  • Diameters: 3" through 24" (including 4-1/2", 5-9/16", 6-5/8", 8-5/8", 10-3/4", 12-3/4", 14", 16", 18", 20", 24") — call for additional sizes
  • Standards: ASTM A53 Grade A and Grade B (domestic and import options available)
  • Wall Thickness: .216" to .500" depending on diameter (Schedule 40 or heavier per code requirements)
  • Advantages: High collapse strength, handles driving/hammering, withstands deep formations
  • Corrosion Protection: Galvanized or epoxy-coated options; many prefer bare steel with passive rust layer
  • Best For: Rocky, very deep wells, municipal systems, unstable formations
  • Requirements: New prime pipe only (no reused oilfield casing for water wells)
  • Lengths: 20 to 21-foot joints, plain end or threaded & coupled with R&D couplings
  • 65+ steel casing SKUs in stock — domestic and import options. Call for complete size list.

Casing End Connections

Proper joint selection ensures well integrity and watertight seals:

Threaded & Coupled (T&C)

Male threads on pipe ends screw into coupling sleeves. Quick and effective for smaller diameters (4-12"). NPT tapered threads or O-ring sealed buttress threads for PVC.

Welded Plain Ends

Butt-welded joints for large-diameter steel casing. Strong, permanent, smooth exterior profile. Often required for public supply wells.

Bell & Spigot (Lap Weld)

Flared bell end receives plain spigot end, then lap-welded. Easier alignment, low exterior profile. Common in municipal construction.

Welding Collars

Short sleeve welded around joint. Creates joints as strong as casing itself. Ideal for stainless steel screens joined to carbon steel casing.

Well Screens & Slot Sizing

Screen selection is critical - the slot size must retain formation or filter pack material while allowing maximum water flow:

Screen Types
  • Continuous Wire-Wrapped (Johnson Screen): V-wire wrapped around support rods with precise slots (0.006" to 0.100"+). High open area (15-30%), minimizes entrance velocity and head loss. Gold standard for municipal wells.
  • Slotted PVC/Perforated Pipe: Saw-cut slots or drilled holes. Economical for domestic/irrigation wells. Lower open area than wire-wrap.
  • Stainless Steel (304/316): Corrosion-resistant, maintains slot dimensions long-term. Required for corrosive water conditions.
  • PVC Screens: Rust-proof, economical for smaller diameters. Must be adequately thick for deep wells.
  • We stock over 400 well screen SKUs in various diameters, lengths, slot sizes, and materials. Call for our full screen catalog.
Slot Size Selection
  • Common Sizes: .010", .020", .030", .040", .050", .060"
  • Naturally Developed Wells: Select slot to retain 40-50% of formation (D50 guideline). Finer grains removed during development.
  • Gravel Pack Wells: Select slot to retain 90-100% of filter pack material. Design from formation into the well.
  • Steel Screen Consideration: Start smaller to account for potential slot widening from corrosion
  • Stainless/PVC: Can use slightly larger slots since dimensions remain stable
  • Sieve Analysis Required: Always base selection on grain size analysis of aquifer or pack material
  • Need a specific slot size or diameter? We can source it — call for availability.
Slot Size Quick Reference for Different Aquifer Types
Aquifer MaterialTypical Slot SizeNotes
Fine Sand.010" - .015"May require gravel pack for best results
Medium Sand.020" - .030"Most common residential applications
Coarse Sand.030" - .040"Natural development often sufficient
Gravel/Coarse Material.040" - .060"+High capacity irrigation/municipal wells
With Gravel PackBased on pack D10Retain 90-100% of pack material

Gravel Pack (Filter Pack) Design & Materials

A properly designed filter pack increases well yield, prevents sand pumping, and stabilizes the aquifer around the well:

Filter Pack Objectives
  • Prevent Sand Production: Creates permeable barrier stopping native fine sand from entering screen during pumping
  • Enhance Hydraulic Conductivity: Creates a zone of enhanced permeability around screen for reduced head loss and improved efficiency
  • Support Borehole & Screen: Physically props open annulus, prevents collapse, helps centralize screen
Pack Material Requirements:
  • Clean, washed silica sand - free of clay, silt, organics
  • Well-sorted (uniform) grain size - UC around 1.5-2.5
  • Well-rounded, spherical grains for maximum permeability
  • High quartz (silica) content - hard, chemically inert
Sizing & Installation
Pack Sizing (Terzaghi Rule):
  • Pack D15 = approximately 4-6x formation D85
  • Alternative: Pack D50 = 4-5x formation D50
  • Screen slot sized to retain 90-100% of pack
Available Grades:
  • 8/12 mesh: Grains ~2.38-1.68mm (medium sand aquifers)
  • 12/20 mesh: Medium-fine applications
  • 20/40 mesh: Fine sand aquifers, monitoring wells
  • Glass bead packs: Ultra-uniform, chemically inert option
  • Additional grades and specialty packs available — call for details
Installation Methods:
  • Tremie Pipe (Preferred): Bottom-up placement for uniform pack, minimizes bridging
  • Free-Fall Pouring: Shallow wells only, pour through water, may require surging

Well Completion, Grouting & Sealing

Proper annular sealing prevents contamination and ensures code compliance:

Annular Grouting Materials
Cement Grout:
  • Portland cement with 2-5% bentonite to reduce shrinkage
  • Creates rigid, strong seal with structural support
  • Often required for public supply wells
  • Place by tremie (pressure grout) for best results
  • Allow 24+ hours cure time before pump testing
Bentonite Grout:
  • High-swelling montmorillonite clay - swells when hydrated
  • Available as powder (slurry), chips, or pellets
  • Low permeability immediately upon hydration
  • Flexible, self-sealing, fills irregular spaces
  • Best in saturated zones (can crack if dried out)

Best Practice: Bentonite for lower annulus, cement cap for upper 10 feet near surface

Drilling Methods Comparison

Choose the right drilling method based on formation type, depth, diameter, and project requirements:

Mud Rotary

Most common method for modern water wells

  • How it works: Rotating bit grinds formation; drilling mud lifts cuttings and stabilizes borehole
  • Best for: Unconsolidated sediments, soft rock, deep boreholes (hundreds to thousands of feet)
  • Advantages: Versatile, maintains open holes, handles wide range of formations
  • Considerations: Proper mud properties essential; may need to switch to air hammer in hard rock
  • Applications: Residential, irrigation, and municipal wells in alluvial terrains
Air Rotary / DTH Hammer

Fast drilling in hard, dry rock formations

  • How it works: Compressed air lifts cuttings; DTH hammer adds percussion for hard rock
  • Best for: Medium to hard rock, bedrock wells after casing off overburden
  • Advantages: Very fast in hard rock, clean dry holes, reduced development time, no mud disposal
  • Limitations: Cannot support loose formations; water ingress reduces lifting efficiency
  • Applications: Deep bedrock residential wells, granite/basalt aquifers
Cable Tool (Percussion)

Historic method still valuable for special applications

  • How it works: Heavy tools repeatedly lifted and dropped to pulverize formation; bailer removes cuttings
  • Best for: Bouldery strata, alternating hard/soft layers, remote locations
  • Advantages: Simple equipment, lowest fuel consumption, precise sampling, drives casing as it advances
  • Limitations: Slowest method (few feet per hour in hard rock), labor-intensive
  • Applications: Small diameter wells, remote areas, environmental monitoring
Reverse Circulation (RC)

Large-diameter municipal and high-capacity wells

  • How it works: Fluid flows down annulus, up through drill pipe - cuttings evacuated through inner tube
  • Best for: Large-diameter wells (24"+), detailed aquifer logging, environmentally sensitive sites
  • Advantages:
    • Accurate formation sampling from known depths
    • Efficient large cutting removal, extends bit life
    • Reduced fluid loss and borehole erosion
    • Contained cuttings discharge - cleaner sites
  • Equipment: Specialized dual-wall drill pipe, larger rigs required
  • Applications: Municipal production wells, test wells, gravel-pack installations
Method Selection Guide
Residential (sand/clay):Mud Rotary
Residential (bedrock):Air Rotary / DTH Hammer
Irrigation (alluvial):Mud Rotary
Municipal (large diameter):Reverse Circulation
Remote/bouldery:Cable Tool
Mixed formations:Combination approach

Many projects use multiple methods - e.g., mud rotary through overburden, then DTH hammer in rock
