4-inch residential submersible pumps from Berkeley, Goulds, Grundfos, and Shakti for domestic water wells, ranging from 1/2 HP to 5 HP with flow rates from 7 to 50+ GPM.
Residential submersible well pumps are the heart of every domestic water-well installation. A 4" pump drops into the casing, sits below the static water level, and pushes water to the pressure tank through a drop pipe. When spec'ed correctly against well yield, static level, and demand, a submersible runs 15-25 years with only minor maintenance. When spec'ed wrong, it dry-runs and burns up in a season.
Drillworx stocks residential submersibles in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, and 2 HP sizes from the manufacturers the drilling contractors we serve trust most. We carry matched 4" motors, drop-pipe adapters, torque arresters, and the replacement check valves and splices that keep a pump running. For deeper wells and higher demand, see the 6" commercial submersibles in the adjacent subsection.
Pump selection is not horsepower-first — it is flow-and-head first. A 1 HP pump in the right curve moves more usable water than an oversized 2 HP in the wrong curve. If you are not sure which pump fits the well, send the static level, drawdown, well yield in GPM, and pressure-tank cut-in/out to the salesperson for your region and we'll help you match the curve.
Field guidance
4" submersibles in 1/2-1-1/2 HP cover the majority of residential installations with 4-6 person households and typical appliance demand.
Step to a 6" pump for the head capacity deeper wells demand. A 4" pump will deliver water from 500 ft but at a duty cycle that shortens motor life.
Match pump GPM to sustainable well yield. Oversizing to the pressure-tank demand rather than the well yield is the most common cause of dry-run failures. Consider a cycle-control device for marginal wells.
Specify stainless pump-end and upgraded check-valve materials. Standard-material pumps in aggressive water fail years before their motor-life rating.

FAQ
Three inputs: sustainable well yield (GPM from drawdown testing), total dynamic head (static level + drawdown + elevation to pressure tank + friction losses), and peak household demand. Pick the smallest pump whose curve delivers household demand at the required head without exceeding well yield. Oversizing is the leading cause of early failure.
Typical answer: 3/4 or 1 HP 4" pump delivering 8-10 GPM at 250-300 ft total dynamic head. Confirm against your specific static level and yield; on marginal wells, add a cycle-control device rather than upsizing the pump.
15-25 years in good water with a properly-sized pump, good electrical supply, and a functioning pressure-tank system. Short-cycling, undersized drop pipe, or iron/manganese-heavy water all shorten life. Drillworx stocks pump-saver devices and retention tanks to protect against those failure modes.
