Down-the-hole hammers for rotary and percussion drilling
A down-the-hole hammer delivers percussive impact directly at the bit face, so almost all of the drill rig's air energy becomes rock-breaking energy. That makes DTH the tool of choice for drilling through competent rock where rotary bits would stall. The rig supplies rotation and down-pressure; the hammer supplies the impact.
Drillworx stocks DTH hammers across the full contractor size range: 3" and 4" for water-well piloting, 5" and 6" for bread-and-butter water and geothermal work, 8" and 10" for larger municipal and foundation bores. Shank options include IR 3 and 4, Mincon, Numa, and Epiroc-compatible — pick the shank that fits the bits your shop already stocks rather than starting a new bit inventory.
Hammer selection is not just about bore diameter. Air consumption, rig pressure capacity, and down-pressure rating all need to match. A hammer that is too big for the compressor drills slow; one that is too small for the rig under-utilizes the equipment. The salesperson for your region can help you pair hammer, bits, and compressor before you spec tooling for a new ground type.
Field guidance
5" and 6" hammers handle the majority of residential and commercial water-well installations in granite, limestone, and similar rock.
Smaller 4"-5" hammers produce tight, consistent bores that accept loop pipe without wasted grout volume. Air-mist systems reduce water usage in loop-field work.
8" and 10" hammers handle casing-size bores for foundation work and large-yield municipal water wells.
For HDD bores with significant rock, the HDD Hammer Systems subsection carries hammer tooling designed for horizontal rather than vertical orientation.

FAQ
Most 6" hammers run on 900-1150 cfm at 350 psi. Older hammers run lower pressure with less penetration rate. Check the spec sheet for your specific hammer — running below rated pressure drops ROP significantly and can shorten hammer life.
Plan on hammer teardown and inspection every 10-20 thousand feet of drilling, or sooner if piston-strike energy drops noticeably. Drillworx stocks rebuild kits for all common hammers and offers full-service rebuilds at several locations.
IR 4 is the more common current shank for 5" and 6" hammers. IR 3 is still used on smaller hammers and older water-well rigs. Match the shank to your existing bit inventory unless you are replacing the whole inventory.
Our team maintains inventory across 8 locations. Send us your spec and we'll confirm availability the same day.
