Base mud products for drilling fluid systems
Bentonite is the most-used drilling-fluid additive on the continent and the backbone of virtually every HDD and water-well mud program. When hydrated, sodium-bentonite particles swell and form a gel that thickens water, suspends cuttings, and plasters the hole wall to prevent fluid loss. A properly-built bentonite mud is the difference between a clean pullback and a collapse-and-stuck.
Drillworx stocks high-yield bentonite gels sized for HDD crews: 50-lb bags, pallet quantities, and bulk super-sacks for large jobs. We also carry soda-ash for water-quality conditioning and the polymer additives that extend bentonite performance in reactive clays or salty makeup water.
For specification questions — yield point, viscosity target, Marsh-funnel readings — the home-page FAQ covers the basics and the salesperson for your region can help you dial in a mix against your specific formation. Drillworx does not drill; we supply the drilling contractors who do, and we keep good notes on what is running in what ground.
Field guidance
Bentonite forms the filter cake that holds fluid in the hole and keeps the wall intact. Run 30-60 kg of high-yield bentonite per 1000 L of water as a starting point.
Treat makeup water with soda-ash first to drop hardness below 100 ppm and lift pH to 8-9. Bentonite hydrates slowly and incompletely in hard water without pre-treatment.
A properly-built bentonite mud carries cuttings from the full hole depth to the surface tanks. Check Marsh-funnel viscosity every rod or two; adjust with additions rather than fresh mixes.
Allow extra hydration time in cold water — up to 20-30 minutes before adding polymers or circulating. Hydration is temperature-dependent.

FAQ
Most HDD crews run 30-60 kg of high-yield bentonite per 1000 L of clean, treated water. Start at the low end for coarser ground and step up for finer sand. Target a 45-second+ Marsh-funnel viscosity for typical utility work.
Hard water is the most common cause. Treat makeup water with soda-ash to pH 8-9 and hardness under 100 ppm, then add bentonite slowly with a high-energy mixer and allow 10-20 minutes hydration. Adding polymers before bentonite is fully hydrated is the second-most-common mistake.
In reactive clay or shale ground, yes — a PHPA polymer encapsulates clay and reduces stickiness and torque. In clean sand or rock, bentonite alone is usually enough. Add polymer last, after bentonite is fully hydrated.
