Heavy-duty rods for production drilling rigs
4-1/2" OD rod is the workhorse tube for the larger HDD rigs — Vermeer Navigator D60 and up, Ditch Witch JT60 class, and comparable iron. The larger OD gives the torsional capacity for bigger bits and long pullbacks, and the wall thickness holds up to the bending stresses of extended-reach bores.
Drillworx stocks new 4-1/2" rod in pipeline lengths with matched thread-protectors and the thread compound that actually works in the real world. We also carry rebuilt and refurbished rod at meaningful discount for contractors who are expanding a rig's working inventory rather than equipping a brand-new machine. Every rebuilt rod is NDT-inspected and certified to a published spec.
Match rod to rig first, and to the expected bore profile second. A 4-1/2" rod is overkill for short utility laterals and underkill for the longest pipeline crossings — Drillworx stocks the smaller and larger-diameter options in adjacent subsections if you are scoping a new fleet or a specific job.
Field guidance
4-1/2" rod carries the torsional loads of 1000-3000 ft pullbacks with 12-24" product pipe.
Larger rod OD reduces the bending-stress failure mode that catches smaller rod in rock work with high downforce.
Run the rod OD the rig was designed around. Under-sizing to save cost loads the rig breakout system beyond spec; over-sizing costs handling time.
Rebuilt 4-1/2" rod lets a contractor expand a rig's working inventory at 40-60% of new-rod cost when a fresh pipeline job calls for extra footage.

FAQ
Yes, provided the rebuild is NDT-certified and within spec. Keep rebuilt rod in the middle of the string where loads are lower; reserve new rod for the ends. Track rod counts by individual rod ID and retire specific rods at the rebuild-life limit, not the whole batch.
Visual-inspect every pass, NDT-inspect on a scheduled interval based on cycle count — typically 500-1000 cycles for premium connections. Thread compound choice matters: use a compound rated for the rod thread form, not a generic grease.
Yes — the OD is the same but the thread form differs between makes. Specify the rig when you quote and we will confirm the correct thread. Drillworx stocks both.
