Most popular style -- available with conical, button, or shark teeth
The fluted backreamer is the default reaming tool for pulling HDPE product pipe through soft to medium-firm ground. The flutes carry drilling fluid and cuttings out of the hole along their length while the carbide teeth open the diameter. Compared with stacked-plate reamers, fluted bodies handle plastic clays and wet overburden more reliably — the flutes stay cleaner and the reamer is less likely to ball up.
Drillworx stocks fluted reamers from 6" through 36" OD with standard API pin-and-box connections or spline connections matched to the Cobble Boss and Sand Shark series. Specify connection type, pass diameter, and the rod connection upstream when you quote — we maintain pre-built swivel packages for every standard combination so a crew can be assembled and on the road the same day.
For rock-capable fluted work, see the solid-body fluted reamers. Those trade some cuttings capacity for a one-piece forging that handles the impact loads that crack welded-body reamers in cobble.
Field guidance
Flutes shed plastic soils better than stacked-plate reamers. Pair with a high-yield bentonite mud for the best cuttings transport.
Fluted bodies handle wet sand well because fluid can move along the flute length. Step up one reamer size if the hole tends to collapse between passes.
For standard utility and fiber work in typical Midwest and Southeast soils, the fluted reamer is the workhorse of the crew.
Full size range available up to 36" OD. For larger casing, talk to us about barrel and stacked-plate alternatives.

FAQ
Industry guidance is 1.2-1.5x the product OD for small utilities and 1.3-1.5x for medium pipes, with extra margin for rigid pipe. A 6" HDPE service usually finishes in a 9-10" fluted reamer; a 12" HDPE gas main typically finishes at 18"-20". Always verify against project engineering.
Yes. A swivel isolates product-pipe rotation from the drill string so the pipe pulls straight without twisting. Drillworx stocks matched swivels with every reamer; specify size and connection when you quote.
Fluted reamers handle soft and saturated ground better because cuttings move along the flutes. Stacked-plate reamers are faster in firm, dry ground and produce a cleaner hole wall. If you're running mixed ground, the fluted reamer is the safer default.
